Cape Coast Fortress – Assin Manso – Kakum National Park – Elmina Fortress

We will pick you up from your hotel in the Cape Coast area between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m., according to your preferred time. For distances over 10 km, we charge an additional 3 GHS/km. Our first destination is Cape Coast Fortress, located directly on the Atlantic Ocean. Founded in 1637 by Dutch merchants as a trading post, it subsequently had many different owners. Sadly, slaves later became one of the most important commodities traded here. In 1722, one of the largest piracy trials took place here, with 52 pirates hanged. The fortress has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.

Afterward, we will travel to Assin Manso, a site on the historic slave route. Here, about 50 km from Cape Coast, slaves were allowed one last bath in a stream after hundreds of kilometers of walking, before being taken to the infamous slave forts where they sometimes had to wait for months for a ship to America. It is a place of quiet remembrance for the atrocities committed by people throughout history.

Our next destination is Kakum National Park. Here, you can experience secondary rainforest and remnants of primary rainforest. A guided tour explains the natural layers of the rainforest, its plants, and animals. The highlight is a walk on a treetop walkway. The path, which crosses several suspension bridges, is safe but may be challenging for those with a fear of heights.

Afterward, we travel to the oldest European structure south of the Sahara, the Fort of St. George in Elmina. Founded in 1482 by Portuguese explorers, this trading post was an important milestone on the sea route to India. Throughout its turbulent history, merchants from various European countries, as well as in the approximately 72 other fortresses along the Ghanaian coast, engaged in the slave trade. The cramped dungeons and the Gate of No Return bear witness to this. But the spacious quarters of the commanders and their men also leave a profound impression of this tragic chapter in human history. The fortress, along with other historical sites in Ghana, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

After approximately 9 hours, you will return to your hotel.
