2 Days of Coastal Fortresses and Nzulezo – The Village on Stilts

We will pick you up from your hotel in the Cape Coast area between 6 and 8 am. The journey takes approximately two hours west through Sekondi-Takoradi, the capital of the Western Region province. In Busua, on a gentle Atlantic bay, we will stop for a swim. Then we continue to Fort Metal Cross in Dixcove. This fort, built by the British in the 17th century, also had to defend itself in the 18th century against the Prussians stationed at the neighboring Fort Groß Friedrichsburg. We will then visit this Prussian fortress in Awiabo Aiyinase. Afterwards, we travel for two hours to Beyin. From Beyin, the lakeside village of Nzulezo can only be reached by small boat. Life for this community of about 500 people takes place almost exclusively on boats and raffia palm planks driven into the lakebed on stilts. For centuries, the people here have lived in harmony with nature, practicing fishing and agriculture, but modern life has also left its mark. You can experience the daily life of the people, enjoy a drink in a pub, or have freshly fried fish served to you. The local primary school or one of the places of worship can be visited. We will spend the night in a guesthouse on the lake.

After breakfast, we will visit the small Apollonia Fort in Beyin and learn about the culture of the Nzema people. Built by the Swedes and later used by the British and Dutch for the slave trade, Fort Apollonia is one of the World Heritage Sites on the Ghanaian coast.

Two hours away in Axim, we will visit St. Anthony's Fort, built by the Portuguese in 1515 as the second fortification on the Gold Coast. The name itself suggests that ownership changed hands several times over the centuries. What you'll see, however, is a well-preserved, imposing fortress where, as at the other trading posts, slaves were an important commodity on the triangular voyages to America and Europe well into the 19th century. And now we're already on our way back to Cape Coast. There will certainly be an opportunity along the way to take a dip in the Atlantic Ocean.

After approximately 32 hours, we will bring you back to your hotel.
